Welcome to the Birmingham of the Future

construction-birmingham

Birmingham is enjoying a period of key regeneration, infrastructure and development, with 2018 proving to be a vital year. But what does the future of Birmingham look like in 10 years time? Or even 20?

Investment levels are at a record high for the West Midlands and Birmingham is currently the top target. Smart investors are quickly noticing the potential for employment opportunities as well as the increasing demand for quality city-centre living. As multiple, global businesses set up headquarters in the heart of Birmingham, the city’s core business, financial and professional services (BFPS) hub – already the largest outside of London – is only set to strengthen.

Have you ever wondered what the Birmingham skyline might look like in 2028? You’re in the right place. We’ve looked at a number of exciting new projects that will transform Birmingham as we know it.

Paradise Central

This development is arguably the most talked about of Birmingham’s major property projects. With the third building ‘One Centenary Way’ starting to take shape, it represents a huge effort to create nearly 280,000 sq ft of mixed-use space. The £700 million Paradise development as a whole will transform Birmingham, providing commercial, civic, retail, leisure and hotel space.

Exchange Square (Phase 2)

With a complete re-design, the second phase of Exchange Square now comprises of a seven-storey and 46-storey residential tower with outdoor terraces and retail units. Residents will also get access to an exclusive sky lounge.

Arena Central

Planned as a mixed-use development, Arena Central is designed to meet Birmingham’s demand for office and residential space. Arena Central is a major part of the Big City Plan and work is already underway on One Centenary Square, 3 Arena Central and the public spaces.

Axis Square (Phase 2)

A huge office-led development that sits next door to the Mailbox. Phase 1 involves removing the old Axis building and erecting the replacement, before it’s joined by three further office blocks during Phase 2.

Old Snobs venue becoming a Boutique Hotel

The seven-storey Beneficial Building is mostly vacant after Snobs relocated to Smallbrook Queensway in 2014. The latest plans for the building include turning it into a 130-bedroom hotel with ground floor retail and commercial areas.

Park Regis Residential Development

After the Park Regis hotel opened on Broad Street in Spring 201, SevenCapital began pressing on with the next plans. This 17-storey apartment block will sit on the car park that currently serves the hotel (maintaining the number of hotel parking spaces within the new development), providing 228 apartments and six ground-floor commercial units. This new development will play a huge part in the future of Birmingham city centre.

HS2

The largest infrastructure project in Europe, HS2 is set to have a significant, positive impact on access between London and the Midlands. With a new station based around Curzon Street, HS2 will reduce times between Birmingham and the capital to just 49 minutes, carrying an estimated 26,000 people per hour.

Metro Expansion

With the West Midlands Metro currently running between Grand Central, the Jewellery Quarter, West Bromwich and Wolverhampton, it’ll soon be extended to include key locations  around Birmingham including Curzon Street, Birmingham Airport and Five Ways.

Snowhill Estate

As one of Birmingham’s most prominent office developments, Snowhill Estate fast becoming Birmingham’s answer to Canary Wharf. Three Snowhill is the third and final building on the estate and at 420,000 sq ft will become the largest speculative city centre scheme in the UK outside of London.

Costing £200 million, the building will be ready for occupation in 2019, although no tenants have been officially announced.

This is just a selection of what is on the horizon for Birmingham. As investment floods into the city, the skyline fills with cranes, building the next wave of developments. The future of Birmingham will be unrecognisable from the city we know today.
