SevenCapital and MARK, in collaboration with iconic British firm Charles Farris, have unveiled a bespoke signature scent Ambered Citrine, created exclusively for 100 Kensington, the new £500 million (GDV) residential led development on West Cromwell Road, providing the only new vertical village in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
As a Royal Warrant holder with a 180 year history of master chandlery, and understanding of the power of scent to evoke an instant sense of place or memory, Charles Farris was a natural choice of partner with which to collaborate on the creation of a distinctive, yet delicate, custom scent.
The team at Charles Farris were inspired by the many green spaces throughout 100 Kensington, including the podium and roof gardens, and linear park, the scent of each gently calming and evolving with the seasons.
With top notes of bergamot, lime and mandarin, heart notes of saffron, amber and ylang-ylang, and base notes of moss, musk, vetiver and cashmere, Ambered Citrine provides an immediate calming, sensory connection for visitors to 100 Kensington’s newly opened marketing suite, that subtly connects and the brand new vertical village and gardens, via outsized ceramic reed diffusers.
This unique scent, tenderly created to embody the tranquil sense of home encapsulated within 100 Kensington, has been used to create candles and diffuser oil, the latter used in a set of five custom, organically shaped, earth-toned ceramic holders, designed by award-winning East London-based ceramic artist Louise Power. Her design for the custom ‘vessels’ takes inspiration from 100 Kensington and the integrated nature of the buildings that connect via gardens and green spaces, which form the heart of the scheme, with the earthy colourways of cream, taupe and black connecting directly to the external colours of the buildings.
The vessels can be arranged solely or in pairs, when the cut-away semicircles of each vessel reveal a bisected circle, representing the coming together of the new 100 Kensington community and its inclusive nature. The custom scented candles, contained in lidded tins, are available for buyers, as a sensory aide memoire, while their new home is completed.
With an architectural masterplan by John McAslan & Partners and detailed design by Corstorphine & Wright, 100 Kensington will provide a new architectural gateway for Kensington, with seven striking buildings designed around a central podium garden incorporating the tallest tower to date in the borough, and providing 462 new homes, including 276 market sale apartments and 186 affordable homes. The new vertical village also offers gardens and terraces, a pavilion building for cinema screening and events; a health club with gym, swimming pool and fitness studio; concierge, retail and office premises.
James Moody, Chief Operating Officer of SevenCapital says: “When commissioning a bespoke scent to define and evoke 100 Kensington, Charles Farris was the clear choice. With its history of nearly 200 years of fine British candle craft, and status as a Royal Warrant holder, it spoke to both the wonderful history of Kensington while providing a seamless sensory link to the cutting-edge architecture, modern luxury, contemporary quality and craftsmanship on offer at the only new vertical village in the Royal Borough. Visitors to the newly opened marketing suite at 100 Kensington will be gently enveloped by the scent, forging an immediate sensory connection with their new home.”
Timothy Duggan-Rees, Retail and Creative Director at Charles Farris, says: “Crafting scent memories is a delicate, complex art, as selected wisps of recall become permanent, indelible layers that build emotional connection to a favoured place. To create a bespoke fragrance for reed diffusers and candles that embodies 100 Kensington’s tranquil sense of home, we drew on Charles Farris’s 180 years of experience candle making and dived deep into the heritage and royal connections of the Borough. The result was the evocative Ambered Citrine, inspired by The Orangery at Kensington Palace, with a fresh modern lilt in the contemporary top notes of bergamot, mandarin and lime.”
To create a bespoke signature scent for 100 Kensington, Charles Farris dived deep into the history of the borough, to forge a sensory and emotional narrative through fragrance. With a brief to create a universally appealing scent that could evoke a feeling of tranquillity, Charles Farris worked with master blenders on several possible fragrances, from floral scents inspired by the gardens of Kensington, opulent ones by the wealth of the area, wildflower, woodland and meadow tones notes by the Royal Parks of Kensington, and musks inspired by the libraries of the Natural History Museum.
The standout scent would become known as Ambered Citrine, inspired by the early 18th-century Orangery at Kensington Palace, believed to have been designed by visionary architect Nicholas Hawksmoor to a commission by Queen Anne. With its top notes of bergamot, mandarin and lime, and amber, ylang-ylang, moss and vetiver below, the fragrance gently evokes the past while seamlessly connecting to a new and innovative sense of place.
Charles Farris’s story dates back to 1845, when it began crafting candles for London’s most eminent churches. The company was granted a Royal Warrant by His Majesty King George V in 1935, followed by warrants from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1955 and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in 1984. Today, with a commitment to sustainability and time-honoured British candlecraft at its Wiltshire-based factory, Charles Farris continues to supply candles to Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral, and holds a Royal Warrant from His Majesty King Charles III.
Charles Farris has also become globally renowned for its elegant many-hued dinner candles and its range of luxury scented candles and reed diffusers, the result of closely guarded scent recipes blended for them by some of the world’s finest perfumers.
Similarly, Kensington and Chelsea (granted Royal Borough status in 1901, after the death of Queen Victoria, who was born at Kensington Palace) has long been synonymous with luxury, success, innovation and quality. 100 Kensington builds on this tradition, located on a 1.7 hectare site which was originally part of the hunting grounds of the Kensington estate of Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell and his son Richard, and which in the 1850s formed part of Prince Albert’s ‘Albertopolis’ plan for a Victorian science park.
Prices at 100 Kensington range from £895,000 to £5 million, with first occupations scheduled for 2027.
The new 100 Kensington marketing suite, with full scale model and show home, and the welcoming scent of Ambered Citrine, is located 154 – 158 High Street Kensington and open Monday to Sunday.
